OMG!
I was reading one of my favorite cooking magazines and there was a cool little blurb on sodium and canned goods, and it took me by surprise. So I thought I would share it with you.
A 15-ounce can of beans can have 1,570 mg of sodium.

If you RINSE and DRAIN them you get about 926 mg of sodium. That is about 36% less sodium.
I was surprised because though 36% less sodium is great, it is still a lot of sodium. Lesson here, use canned food sparingly and if you do, make sure to rinse and drain.
To control the amount of sodium, cook your beans from scratch. You can make a whole package and cook them with just a touch of salt and pepper and then you can freeze them separately in containers and then use them with whatever condiments, spices, or recipes you would like.
This will save you time and a ton of sodium!
I just had to share this, as I think people don't realize how much sodium are in canned foods even if you rinse and drain them.
And hey, don't you feel bad about using canned beans. Even the best cooks use them. I use them a lot in chicken or turkey chili, in soups, salads, etc. So use them but use them SMART!
