Healthy Recipe For Turkey: Do You Use Non-Fat Cooking Spray To Cook

The other day I was training a client and all of a sudden she pulls out a recorder……..yes, a recorder!  She decided she was going to record me every time I talked about a recipe or anything that had to do with nutrition.

So I start telling her about this amazing turkey recipe I made the other day….Yes, I’ll give it to you in a second!  She busts out her recorder as I start telling her the ingredients.  At one point I was telling her to spray a sauté pan with non-fat cooking spray………..her and her sister said…..oh we always cook with that!  Of course why wouldn’t you, after all it says it’s calorie-free, fat-free!  But my dear friend, it’s not!  It only is if you use 1/3 of a second spray.  So make sure that you do not have a spraying party with your skillets, and sauté pans.  I know, isn’t it unbelievable?

The thing is that most people aren’t educated consumers, so they read calorie-free and fat-free and they don’t even bother to read the nutrition facts.  How can it be fat-free, calorie-free?  Every nutrition fact on there says 0 grams.

So what the heck is in there?

Well if you read the ingredients on the Canola oil spray, the first ingredient is canola oil.  The ingredients are placed in descending order of abundance, so the first ingredient is the most abundant.  So we agree that the first ingredient is canola oil.  Now grab a bottle of canola oil and read the nutrition facts!  It has 120 calories of which 120 are fat…..doesn’t take a genius to know it is 100% fat!  It also has 14grams of fat in 1 tbsp.  So if that is what is most abundant in the non-fat cooking spray, why does is say it has no fat and no calories?  The same reason I told you last week when I spoke about FAT!  Since there is no restriction on serving size, they can make it as tiny as they want.  Yeah girl, you try spraying only 1/3 of a second on your pan!

My clients were in awe!  They could not believe this!  Now this doesn’t mean don’t ever use it.  I use it to cook sometimes, just make sure you use it lightly and understand you are putting fat on the pan.  I spray it lightly and then wipe it down with a paper towel.  Unbelievable huh?

Healthy Recipes:  Sloppy Turkey

Ingredients:
5 garlic cloves, finely chopped
1 onion, finely chopped
1 packet of Portobello mushrooms, finely chopped
1 lb lean ground turkey
½ cup dry sherry
One 15-ounce can tomato sauce
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Manchego cheese, for shaving
Salt and pepper to taste
Non-fat cooking spray

Instructions:
In a deep skillet, heat the cooking spray and add the garlic and onion.  Cook until soft, and add the mushrooms.  Once browned, add the turkey and cook breaking it up until browned.  Season with salt and pepper.  Stir in the sherry and cook, scraping the bits from the bottom of the pan.  Stir in tomato and Worcestershire sauces and simmer for about 15 minutes.  Make brown rice.  To serve, place the rice on a plate and add the sloppy turkey on top, add shavings of the Manchego cheese on top.  It’s to die for!

By the way, last week I talked to you about supplementing your diet with fish oil and krill oil.  I’ve been getting lots of questions on where to get these supplements.  To get these supplements click on the following link Fish Oil.
