What is the Deal with Sugar? The other day I was on theknot.com reading through some of the discussion boards. Wow! I am amazed at all the very frustrated and confused women out there. I mean, I commend them for reaching out and asking for ideas and exchanging thoughts. But here lies the problem. It is like the blind leading the blind.
The other day I was on theknot.com reading through some of the discussion boards. Wow! I am amazed at all the very frustrated and confused women out there. I mean, I commend them for reaching out and asking for ideas and exchanging thoughts. But here lies the problem. It is like the blind leading the blind.
There were so many posts on healthy breakfasts, fast breakfasts; and I could not believe the responses. See most of these girls have not yet achieved their fitness goals, they are not personal trainers but they are giving tips and options, which are not optimal. So, if you are one of these people that are on the discussion boards exchanging tips and ideas, I commend you for your effort.
Now, I am going to explain why most of these breakfast options are not good for fat loss, and I will give you some quick and easy recipes to help you enjoy a quick breakfast that is healthy and will help you optimize fat loss. Here we go………………
Breakfast options that are not optimal:
- Slim Fast
- Granola bar and Yogurt
- Fruit
- Cereal and Skim milk
- Muffin and an apple
- Turkey slices and OJ
- 1 slice of whole wheat bread with peanut butter
- Low-carb protein shake
- Egg whites and coffee
First of all, let's talk about why these are not good options. Most of the foods above are high in sugar. The following foods from the above list are loaded in sugar. Slim Fast, granola, most cereals, muffin, yogurt, fruit, juices, and milk. Oh yes! I know you are surprised because you might have never thought some of these foods were loaded with sugar. For example fruit while having many vitamins and antioxidants are very high in sugar.
Here are some examples:
Apple: 13g sugar
Banana (1 cup): 28g sugar
Grapes (1 cup): 15g sugar
1 granola bar: 17g sugar
Banana Muffin: 12g sugar and 300mg sodium
Ok, so what is the deal with sugar?
When you eat food that is high in sugar, your pancreas starts to release the hormone insulin. This hormone takes the sugar from the blood and takes it into the muscle for fuel and stores the rest in the liver. While this means absolutely nothing to you, what is important is that when insulin is being released, another hormone is suppressed. This hormone is called glucagon, not that you need to know the name of it. Just know that this is the hormone that releases fat cells. Oh yeah! So if you are suppressing this hormone that releases fat cells, YOU ARE LIMITING YOUR ABILITY TO BURN FAT!
So yes, you may be waking up, eating your muffin and OJ and going to the gym for an hour workout and burn absolutely NO FAT!
So what are better options?
Breakfast options that will help you burn fat:
" Egg Mc Muffin: 1 whole-wheat English muffin/gluten-free bread, 3 egg whites, 1 slice fat-free cheese
" Oatmeal and egg whites
" Egg white omelet with spinach, red and green peppers, and 2 slices of whole-wheat toast/gluten-free toast
" Oatmeal Pancake: blend 3-4 egg whites, ½ cup oatmeal, ¼ cup fat-free cottage cheese, cinnamon to taste; and cook on a small pan.
" Egg whites and 2 whole-wheat toast
" Whole-wheat bagel/gluten-free bagel with fat-free cottage cheese
These options only take a couple of minutes to make and they are lean proteins accompanied by a complex carbohydrate, if you can add a veggie even better. Try these options, not only will they help you burn fat more efficiently, but they taste really good too. ENJOY!
