EATING IS SOMETHING THAT IS TAUGHT & LEARNED

Growing up, my mom would cook something different every single day.  She said we had to at least try it without fussing.  She wouldn’t serve us a lot, just enough so that we could try it.  If we fussed she gave it to us for the next meals until we stopped fussing.   Her intentions were to teach us how to eat.

I remember her saying that we needed to learn how to eat everything so that no matter where we went and what we ate, we would be able to eat it.  So at a very young age my sister and I learned how to eat EVERYTHING.

I recall a day that my sister fussed over eating carrots.  She ended up eating carrots for dinner that night, breakfast the next morning, lunch the next day and dinner the next NIGHT.  Holy Moly!

But you know what?  There is not a single food my sister, my brother or I don’t like.  Thanks to my mother teaching us and exposing us to all foods, I can truly say “we are good eaters”.

It really blows my mind when I hear friends and clients tell me how they feed their kids grilled cheese, hot dogs, chicken nuggets, and pizza for dinner. Do you really call that food?

I’m sorry if you feel insulted, my hope is that if this is you, that you will see that there is still hope and you can still teach your kids how to eat properly and nutritiously.

Some parents don’t do it because they are lazy, some don’t care, some don’t know how to eat right themselves.  By the way, YOU MUST LEAD BY EXAMPLE!

There are so many diseases and illnesses that can be prevented by a healthy diet.  That it is sad to not teach your family to eat right.

It’s not easy, but it can be done.  If my 32-year old husband can learn to eat as a grown ass man, than so can your kids.  Excuse my French!  I feel very passionate about this!

When I met Danny the only vegetable he ate was CORN.  His diet consisted of skirt steak, white rice, beans, bread and milk.  And I am proud to say that these days my hubby enjoys asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, eggplant, turkey, and all kinds of nutritious foods.

It took some time, but we did it.  I started by chopping up the veggies really small and “HIDING” them in his food, then I started changing up the ways I was cooking the veggies, until we found the ways he liked them.

I urge you to invest the time in teaching your kids and family how to eat nutritiously and properly.  It will take some time, patience, cooking, planning and preparing, but it will be worth it.

I know you can do it!  Stop feeding your family junk, not only will you be adding years to their lives but you will be helping yourself also by having healthy food available all the time.

I am also proud to say that my 15-month old son Nicholas is a GREAT EATER! Why?  Because I have exposed him to every kind of healthy food available.  If he fusses, I keep trying, I make it different, and I sit there with patience until he eats it.  And then I expose it to him again and again, and these days Nico eats EVERYTHING!  The other day I made him pasta and he didn’t want it, he wanted what mommy was eating which was cauliflower, brussel sprouts and spinach turkey meatballs.  YEP, you heard it right, a 15-month old eating brussel sprouts instead of pasta.

So don’t give up, don’t get frustrated!  Keep re-introducing foods to your kids, hubby or even yourself.   Make them in different ways until you find which ways you like them, and soon you will be proud to say yourself that your FAMILY eats healthy and nutritiously all the time.

Thanks for the reminder that we have to be persistent-more persistent than our little ones-in helping them eat a healthy diet, Michelle! It can be tough, particularly at the end of a long day when faster, less healthy options are widely available. Thank you!

Hi Lisa, I know, it can totally be tough! And its ok to feed kids less healthy options once in a while. As long as its not on a daily basis, its ok. Moderation is always key! But i Know that you are a SUPER HEALTHY MOM, and I am sure Savanah eats healthy most of the time! I miss you and hope all is well.
