Does Wine Make You Fat?

I have to confess that I used to be SO hard on my clients in the past.  I never understood why they would have a glass of wine on like a Tuesday!  Why can't you just have a few drinks on the weekend, I would ask.  They always seemed to have some sort of "the kids" excuse.

Fast forward a few years, a pregnancy, a baby, and a TODDLER, and NOW I really get it.  I don't know how they only had 1 glass of wine, sometimes I want to have the whole bottle...... Just kidding, but you know what I mean.  You are so tired from the whole day of work, kids, hubby, cooking, etc.  Sometimes you just want to sit down, tune everyone out and have a darn glass of wine and RELAX!  

Thank goodness I have pretty good WILL POWER and I manage to not have wine during the week, instead I will go for a run!  Try that next time instead of having a glass of wine, when you are feeling frustrated, tired, cranky, put some headphones on with some good music and go out for a 20 minute jog.  If you have little ones, put them in the jogger and go out for a run, you will come back a whole new person.

But I must confess that though I say to myself "only have a glass of wine on Friday", sometimes when were out on Saturday with the baby and I feed him and he cries a few times cuz he doesn't get what he wants, and he throws his toy on the floor 10 times, and spills water all over himself, and tries to get out of the high chair 10 times.............these are the times I joke with my husband and tell him, just get me a bottle, no glass, just the darn bottle!  LOL I know you've been there.  So, hey, sometimes I have a glass or 2 on Saturday also.  I'm HUMAN and though a "fitness expert", not even close to PERFECT!

And if you are wondering when I am going to answer the above question.....Will WINE make you fat?  Here it goes.  If you drink moderately and your nutrition is close to optimal most of the time, a glass or 2 of wine won't make you fat.  The problem arises when you have fried calamari for appetizer, a few bites of the bread rolls, steak and potatoes for your meal and a few bites of dessert.

So what should you do so that you can HAVE SANITY& NOT KILL YOUR HUBBY AND CHILDREN?

  • During the week, eat as close to OPTIMAL and CLEAN as possible.  Try not to indulge in wine during the week. Instead, when you are feeling over the edge, go for a run, a bike ride or a quick workout. It really helps!
  • During the weekend, try to choose ONE day in which you will indulge in a drink or two.  Now here is the trick:  If you know you are going to indulge in a few cocktails, then make sure your food is HEALTHY.  I always do this, if I have a glass or 2 of wine, I make sure my food is CLEAN!  If I don't have a drink, then I will indulge in a few bites of dessert or a little bit of a not so healthy appetizer.  
  • And if you have one of those weekends like I just did where its a glass of wine on the second night or lose it for the night, then have your glass of wine, just make sure that your food is extra clean and that the rest of your meals for the weekend are also.  You can even manipulate your carbohydrates for the day and cut them back a bit if you know you are going to indulge in a few extra glasses of wine, or martini or whatever you think will give you sanity.

I know how hard it is to be a mom, work, and take care of a home.  But I also know how important it is for us to have enough ENERGY to make it through the days, and how important it is for us to feel good about ourselves.  So make the time to workout and make the time to cook and eat healthy.
